City of Winfield Recieves Pathways Funding for Critical Sidewalk Needs

The City of Winfield was awarded $51,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield Pathways grant funding for a sidewalk along 19th Avenue from Andrews Street to Menor Street. It is a common sight to see pedestrians dangerously walking along the edge of 19th Avenue. The expanded sidewalk will link to the grocery center, the Broadway Sports Complex, downtown retail, the levee trail, and a new housing complex. It also lays the groundwork for continued sidewalk projects from the KS Dept. of Transportation to further enhance access to the grocery center.

Who will the project impact?

  • Countywide: 20% of children and 14% of adults are food insecure, and 32% lack access to a grocery store. The sidewalk expands walking/bike access to nutritious foods.
  • 47% of households in the census tract alongside the sidewalk are considered "low income" households, and 57% of the housing is not owner-occupied. Such households are at greater risk for food insecurity and can benefit from increased access.
